App privacy policy

This policy covers the Margen app for Android and the service behind it, which turns your handwriting into text and lets you read it from Claude. The website and its waitlist have their own policy.

Questions or requests: hello@getmargen.app.

The short version

What the app sends, and why

DataWhyLegal basis (GDPR)
Your email addressYour account: we email you a six-digit code to sign in, and to confirm that you want your account deletedContract, art. 6(1)(b)
Images of your handwritten pagesTranscription: a vision model reads them and returns the text, a short title and a one-line summary. The images are also kept so Claude can look at a page when the text isn't enoughContract, art. 6(1)(b)
The text, title and summary of each pageSearch, and reading your notes from Claude once you connect itContract, art. 6(1)(b)
Your ink (the strokes of each page, compressed)Backup, so your notes come back after a reinstall or on a new tabletContract, art. 6(1)(b)
The tablet's maker and model, and its Android device identifierAn account is tied to one tablet, and each tablet gets the free starting credits once. We store only a keyed hash of the identifier, never the identifier itselfLegitimate interest, art. 6(1)(f): preventing abuse of free credits
Your credit balance and its history (one entry per transcribed page)Counting AI usage against your creditsContract, art. 6(1)(b)

Pages are sent in the background when you have a connection. A page is transcribed again only when its ink changes.

Connecting Claude

If you connect Claude, you sign in with your email and approve the connection. Claude can then read the text, titles, summaries and page images of your notes, and nothing from any other account. It can't change or delete anything. What Claude does with what it reads is covered by Anthropic's privacy policy. You can disconnect Claude from the app's settings at any time.

Who processes it for us

These companies may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where they do, the transfer is covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

Deleting your data

The notes on your tablet stay on your tablet until you delete them or uninstall the app.

Your rights

You can ask us to show you, correct, export or delete your data, or to stop using it. Write to hello@getmargen.app; we answer within one month. If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can complain to a data protection authority, in Spain the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos.

Children

Margen is not meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use data you've already given us, we'll tell you in the app or by email first.
