Boox + ChatGPT
How do I get my Boox handwritten notes into ChatGPT?
Updated
Short answer: export the notebook from Boox Notes as a PDF and upload it to ChatGPT, which reads handwriting from images. That works for one notebook at a time.
To let ChatGPT see all your notes, including the ones you write next week, write them in Margen and connect it once: ChatGPT can then search and read every page, with no exports.
Option 1: export a PDF and upload it
This works with any Boox and any ChatGPT plan that accepts files.
- In Boox Notes, open the notebook and use Share or Export to save it as a PDF (or turn on cloud sync, which uploads notebooks as PDFs to the Boox cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive).
- Get the PDF to the device where you use ChatGPT.
- Attach it to a chat and ask: "Transcribe these handwritten pages, then summarize them."
Good for: one meeting, one lecture. Not so good for: anything you keep writing in. Every new page means a new export and a new upload, and ChatGPT only ever sees the files you gave it in that chat.
Tip: if a long PDF gets cut off, upload a few pages at a time. Image-only PDFs of handwriting are heavier for the model than typed documents.
Option 2: convert on the Boox, then paste the text
Boox Notes can convert handwriting to text on demand: select it with the lasso and use the recognition option, or export a note as text. Copy the result and paste it into ChatGPT. This is quick for a short page. The catch is the conversion itself: built-in recognition reads stroke by stroke, so quick handwriting, abbreviations and mixed languages often come out wrong, and you have to fix them before ChatGPT sees them (why that happens).
Option 3: connect your notes once, with Margen
Margen is a notes app for Boox tablets. You write in it with the pen as usual; every page is transcribed in the background by a vision model, with a short title and a one-line summary. ChatGPT then reads your notes through a read-only connector, without any export.
- Write in Margen on your Boox. Pages are transcribed when the tablet is online.
- On a paid ChatGPT plan, on the web, open Settings → Apps → Advanced and turn on developer mode.
- Add
https://connector.getmargen.app/mcpas an app, sign in with your Margen email and the 6-digit code you receive. - Ask: "What did I write about the budget this week?" ChatGPT searches your notes and reads the pages it needs.
On the free ChatGPT plan, developer mode isn't available. Claude works on every plan, including the free one: see which AI assistants can read your notes.

Questions
Can ChatGPT read handwritten notes?
Yes. ChatGPT reads handwriting from images and image-based PDFs, so you can upload an exported Boox notebook and ask it to transcribe or summarize it.
How do I connect my Boox notes to ChatGPT permanently?
Write them in Margen and add its connector in ChatGPT (paid plans, on the web, Settings → Apps → Advanced → developer mode, address https://connector.getmargen.app/mcp). ChatGPT can then search and read all your pages without exports.
Does it work on the free ChatGPT plan?
Uploading a PDF does. The Margen connector needs developer mode, which is on paid ChatGPT plans. On the free plan, Claude can read your Margen notes instead.
Can ChatGPT change my notes?
No. The Margen connector is read-only: ChatGPT can search and read your notes, not edit or delete them.
