Which AI assistants can read your Boox notes?

Short answer: Claude works on every plan, including the free one. ChatGPT works on paid plans. Gemini and Microsoft 365 Copilot can't read Margen notes yet. Notion is next on our list.
Margen transcribes each page you write on your Boox and makes the notes readable through a connector, an open standard called MCP (Model Context Protocol). Any assistant that lets you add an MCP connector by address can, in principle, read your notes. In practice it depends on the assistant and on your plan.

You don't need a paid Claude plan
This is the most common misunderstanding we hear from early users. Margen is in Claude's connector directory, so you add it from there:
- On claude.ai or in the desktop app, open Customize → Connectors → Browse connectors.
- Find Margen and click Connect.
- Enter the email you use in Margen, type the 6-digit code you receive, and click Allow.
You can also browse the directory from a chat, with the + button. Or add Margen as a custom connector with this address: https://connector.getmargen.app/mcp. Anthropic's own help page says custom connectors "are available on Claude, Cowork, and Claude Desktop for users on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans", and that "Free users are limited to one custom connector" (Claude Help Center). That limit is about custom connectors added by address. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner must enable connectors for the organization first.

ChatGPT
On a paid ChatGPT plan, on the web, open Settings → Apps → Advanced, turn on developer mode and add the same address, https://connector.getmargen.app/mcp. You sign in with your Margen email the same way. Then ask ChatGPT about your notes as you would ask Claude. Without the connector, you can still upload a PDF of your notes to ChatGPT.
Gemini and Copilot
Some of our early users get Copilot from work or pay for Gemini, and would rather use those. Here is where things stand:
- Gemini. Google opened custom MCP apps in the Gemini app in 2026, but only for some personal accounts, and with restrictions on country, language and plan that change often. Check Settings → Connected apps in Gemini for an "Add a custom app" option. We haven't tested Margen with it yet, so we can't promise it works.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot. Copilot can use MCP-based connectors, but your organization's admin decides which ones are available. A work account usually can't add one on its own. If your IT team is open to it, write to us.
If you only use Gemini or Copilot, Margen is not the right fit yet: there is no text export on the tablet today. If that's you, tell us at hello@getmargen.app; it's how we decide what comes next.
Questions
Can I use Margen with the free version of Claude?

Does Margen work with ChatGPT?

Not from the tablet yet. Today the text is read through Claude or ChatGPT.
